Staff write-up
Infinite Crisis is an interesting story weighed down by it's own desire to do too much. The ambition is admirable but the execution has some holes.
The build up is massive, covering so many titles, that it's almost impossible to figure out the proper order. You can stick to the main titles, sure, but the jumps between issues can be jarring.
The board is set over dozens of issues but it's wrapped in only a few of the main issues.
This was supposed to be DC's big reset. In some ways it succeeded, but Johns feels like he just rewound the clock not restarted it fresh.
The core is strong, the omac storyline is interesting, but just fizzles out. Wonder Woman's choice/action is the most interesting, but it's shrugged of. The Arthur/Superboy Prime duo are instant villain classics, and that makes this whole event special. Long term story telling still feels the effects, so that is a success in it's own right.
Pivoting to the art, it's safe, but the layouts are lacking. 20 years later, this event can be appreciated for what it did to the DC landscape, but it was a bumpy ride to get there.
