Timing perfection.
There's nothing else to really say, it's the pinnacle of reaction based gaming. It feels smooth, it gives you options but it'll punish you or reward you based on your choices.
Look for patterns, find openings, figure out how to survive. That's the name of the game for Little Mac.
I was in my 20's before I actually beat Iron Mike... One of the best days of my life.
