Like their longtime peers The Starting Line, AfS picked 2025 for a reunion. There were rumors before. False starts. A couple new songs floating around. But nothing that ever felt real or permanent. But yet, here we are.
What to Do When You Are Dead is still an untouchable 2000s emo record. They were never going to top that. The real question was whether they could tap back into that energy.
Not really. But this is still solid.
This feels closer to Smile for Them than WTDWYAD. More restrained. More straightforward. The riffs are familiar. The verses can blur together a bit. There are no huge breakout tracks that demand you replay them immediately.
That said, they have not lost a step. Ben still sounds like Ben. The guitars still shimmer the way you want them to. It sounds like Armor for Sleep. It just does not feel as ambitious or as narratively big as their best work.
It runs just under fifteen minutes and honestly feels like a feeler. A heat check. Seeing if the audience is still there before committing to something larger. If this hits, maybe we get a full album sooner than later. If it does not, maybe they pivot to something grander or disappear altogether. Hard say. But it is good enough to make me want to see where it takes them, hopefully in 2027 or sooner.
